Say what!?! 30 Years on the Bay!
2021 is a big year in so many ways, and this week more than ever we are proud to celebrate 30 years offering our guests truly unique private and public sailing trips - all under original family ownership! Sailing in San Francisco offers a connection to nature, an escape on the water, and the thrill of sailing – all types of happiness that is clear from smiles on the thousands of faces we bring aboard each year.
How did we get here? Being catamaran sailors since their youth (catamaran is the term for the double-hull, flat boat design), owners Pam & Jay (married) and original business partner Hans (since retired) had an idea in the 80’s…”People might like sunset sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge!”….and it turns out they were right! But there was quite a road still ahead between idea and operation.
With the goal of comfortable sailing for all ages, the team set out to find the proper sailboat…and kept searching…and searching…. nothing quite fit the bill. Well, like a Field of Dreams quote – “Build it and they will come”…they did!...With some financing risk and over 10,000 hours of personal construction labor by the team - Pam, Jay and Hans literally built Adventure Cat 1, one of our two boats that is still sailing today!
From there it was on to Coast Guard approvals, and an eventual launch at Pier40 in San Francisco in 1991 for tours and operations. After building some momentum, in 1997 Adventure Cat relocated to the current base of operations on Pier 39 in the Fisherman’s Wharf area, docked next to our famous sea lion friends!
In the early 2000’s we added our 90pax catamaran to the fleet, and we have been offering a mix of Sunset Sail, Bay Sail (daytime), and private charter events ever since! Last, but certainly not least, a nod to our crew – who are easily the highest rated feature of our trips (right after the views). Many have stayed with us for years on end, and we couldn’t do it without their daily knowledge, dedication, and hard work!
